View Article  Zetas named "Prominent Women with Vision"

Five women were recognized as “Prominent Women with Vision” during the 13th annual “Tribute to African-American Women Awards Banquet” Saturday night at Truman Arnold Center at Texarkana College.

The tribute was hosted by the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.

“This event was recognized at the state meeting and received the Best Special Event Award for graduate chapters,” said Brannon Sledge, who attended the Phi Beta Sigma state conference.

Since 1996, the event has saluted 65 women for their positive works and accomplishments.

This year’s winners included Mattye Gouldsby Jones, a DeSoto, Texas, attorney, who was awarded the “Barbara Jordan Distingished Service Award.” Barbara Pitts, director of community development and grants administrator for the City of Texarkana, Ark., was presented the “Sojourner Truth Award.”   more »

Like most dedicated achievers, Richard Watkins and Yunina Barbour-Payne are more concerned about the work they do than any accolades they might receive as a result.

View Article  Zeta recognized for her contributions to education

Myrtle McDaniel, a retired Orangeburg educator, was recently honored by the Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina as one of its 2008 Women of Distinction. She was recognized for her contributions to education.

According to a press release announcing the honor, each year, GSESC honors women who make a difference in their local communities at its annual Women of Distinction event. The awards are presented in recognition of those women who have demonstrated significant achievement in their careers, made contributions affecting their communities and acted as positive role models for today's young women.

McDaniel retired from Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five as assistant superintendent of instruction and curriculum, where she spearheaded the planning and development of the board-adopted Strategic Plan for the Arts.

Provost Ronald J. Daniels announced the appointment of Associate Chaplain Rev. Charles L. Howard, C ’00, as Interim University Chaplain.  Rev. William Gipson, the former University Chaplain, became Associate Vice Provost for Equity and Access on January 1, 2008 (Almanac January 15, 2008). 

Rev. Howard, who served two terms as chairman of the United Minorities Council as a Penn undergraduate, now directs the CHORDS program, a partnership that connects Penn, through the Chaplain’s Office and the Netter Center for Community Partnerships, with West Philadelphia schools, neighborhood organizations, and communities of faith.

View Article  Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc donates $1500

On a single Sunday morning in January, the local chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity collected $1,500 in donations to benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

The group's collection was part of the fraternity's nationwide ``Sunday of Hope'' campaign, which aims to raise $500,000 for the research hospital within five years. The Sunday of Hope campaign will run annually in January.

For 2006-07, the national fraternity raised $100,000, according to Trumaine Thomas, event marketing representative for St. Jude Region 11, which includes Michigan and Ohio.   more »

There won't be much time to recoup from Mardi Gras madness as New Orleans' penchant for celebration continues all month long at Audubon Zoo.

Special events featuring music, food, dance and crafts are scheduled at the zoo to celebrate Black History Month in style.

"Audubon Nature Institute is pleased to offer myriad Black History Month activities again this year that are fun and engaging for the entire family, " said Nannette Smith, director of community relations. Here I am, sitting in my office, all set to slam on the Greeks for not having enough STD/HIV awareness activities, when the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. jump up and take all the steam out of my argument.

And then the members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. jumped up and grabbed some steam of their own.

Don't you just hate it when you get all fired up to argue something, but then you find out you're wrong?

View Article  Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc upholds global mission of helping communities

On Jan. 15, nearly 300 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. from across the Midlands attended a members-only ceremony at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church to celebrate the sorority's 100th anniversary.

Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded in 1908 and marked a pivotal moment in black history that influenced education and civil rights advancements.

During a period when blacks were only a few generations removed from slavery and opportunities to pursue higher education were limited, a group of nine honor students, led by Ethel Hedgeman, established AKA as the first black Greek-letter organization for college-trained black women in the United States.   more »
