The reigning Miss Black Tennessee 2006-2007, Kalilah Allen-Harris, was recently crowned
Miss Black USA. On June 2, 2007, Allen-Harris represented the state of Tennessee in the Miss Black USA Scholarship pageant held in the West African country of the Republic of the Gambia.
Kalilah is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She pledged Mu Zeta chapter in 2004 at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
As Miss Black USA, she receives a $20,000 scholarship and becomes national spokesperson for the organization. Allen-Harris, 22, is a graduate of University of Tennessee and a student at Meharry Medical College.
Allen-Harris will pass on her title as Miss Black Tennessee at the upcoming state pageant. She hopes her winning of the national title will inspire young ladies in Tennessee to recognize their talents and enter the state pageant.
Applications are currently being accepted for contestants in the Miss Black Tennessee USA Scholarship Pageant. All contestants are required to be single, between the ages of 17 and 27, enrolled in a 2-4 year college or university with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and a current residence within the state of Tennessee.
Delegates will compete in five categories: personal interview, health & fitness, talent, evening gown, and the question/answer segment. Our major goals for the pageant competition are: to award scholarships to deserving young women and help further their education at institutions of higher learning; to encourage the cultivation of excellence through the development of education, talent, health and beauty; to provide a showcase that promotes intelligence, strong character and perseverance; and to promote cultural pride and community outreach throughout the state with the ideal that achieving one's destiny must include helping others. The State Delegate will advance to the national competition in June 2008.
The 2007 Miss Black Tennessee Scholarship Pageant will be held August 18th in Nashville, TN. College scholarship awards are as follows:
Winner: $1500
1st Runner-Up: $1500
2nd Runner-Up: $500
Applications must be submitted no later than June 30, 2007.
