Stomp the Yard" is a popular new film that explores aspects of the human drama such as violence, love and envy with fraternity stepping as the backdrop. Stepping, also referred to as stomping, can basically be defined as a dance involving a rhythmical heavy step.

The highlight of the film is at the National Step Competition, where Dem Boyz is shown competing. In real life, Dem Boyz is the 2006 National "Stomping on the Yard" championship team that was profiled in the ESPN2 documentary of the same name - and many of the team members are also students at the College.

"Stomp the Yard" highlights the talents of a few of our own. Past and present students of the College including alumnus Ike Anyanwu; Greggy Amisial, senior biology major; Anton Vallie, junior English education major; and Desmond McDonald, senior criminal justice major, are members of the Dem Boyz Step Team.  more >>

Only Cowboys-Steelers for '96 game drew more viewers, and it's No. 3 on all-time television list.

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning had a lot of witnesses to his soggy victory, with the estimated 93.2 million viewers representing the second most-watched Super Bowl broadcast.

Only the 1996 Super Bowl between Dallas and Pittsburgh, which had 94.1 million viewers, had a bigger audience, according to Nielsen Media Research on Monday. Behind that 1996 game and the "M*A*S*H" series finale, Sunday's game was the third most-watched program in television history. more >>

Savannah College of Art and Design student Omar Richardson is a pioneer of sorts. Richardson (B.F.A., painting, 2006) is the first graduate student in printmaking. From this unique position, he is taking advantage of the college’s cutting-edge facilities to experiment with new media and collaborate with students in other programs to expand his series of culturally influenced pieces.

Richardson transferred to SCAD’s Savannah location, where he majored in painting and minored in printmaking. He also became involved in several extracurricular activities, including the SCAD rowing team, SCAD Student Ambassadors, a Savannah Phi Beta Sigma fraternity chapter and SCAD Radio, where he worked as a DJ. Second-year University of Arkansas School of Law student Christopher Dawkins was recently awarded a 2006-07 Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 1947 to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. As part of his scholarship, Dawkins will continue his legal studies at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa. He will earn approximately $20,000 studying abroad and acting as a student ambassador between South Africa and the United States.

In 2004, Dawkins graduated cum laude from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga., with a bachelor's in political science. While at Morehouse, he continued civic service through Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Morehouse Mentoring Institute, Junior Achievement and Teach for America. His commitment to service resulted in his being awarded a Certificate of Achievement from Georgia Governor Roy Barnes and an Emma and Joe Adams Public Service Scholarship.   more >>

Pitty-pat isn't for little kids, and grill face has nothing to do with the front of a truck. Get your stepping terms straight:

Stepping: Intense dance in which the feet and hands are used as instruments; often a synchronized line dance; rooted in African history and adapted by many black fraternities and sororities into a competitive art form.

Stomping: Synonym for stepping.

Step master: Captain of the step team, sometimes a choreographer, often a lead stepper and the caller in "call-and-response."

Call and response: A musical form sometimes embedded in step routines. The step master begins with a move, then cues other steppers to join in. 

Grill face or mug face: The serious expression worn by steppers, especially when competing.  more >>
