You will remember the YouTube video of the young man who handled a Kappa Kane like none seen before at his age. Black Greek Network went on a search to find out just who little Nupe was.
His name is Omari LeMan Stephens and he is five years old. He has been interested in the kane since he was about 8 months old and began twirling the cane at about 15 months old.
Where did he learn to twirl and shimmy like that? Omari's father is a Kappa of course, and he would sit at home and watch Kappa step show tapes. After watching them a few times and seeing his father dance around the house, he gradually picked up on the moves.
When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, Omari at only five years old has many dreams that change every day. One day he says he want to be a fireman and the next week he might want to be whatever popular cartoon character is showing on television (LOL!!).
Besides twirling the kane, Omari loves to listen to music of all kinds and he also plays the drums. He goes to school (K5) and is doing extremely well.
Omari and his parents live in Birmingham, Alabama. His father of course is a Kappa; Delta Tau/Spr.98 at Miles College. He is a Garnishment agent for Regions Bank. Omari's mother is a Delta; Sigma Eta/Spr.00 at Samford University. She is a registered nurse.
Amazingly, Omari's parents have had so many people contact them about their son's performance that they have lost count. A cousin in the military said she received the video from a friend in Alaska that sent it to her from Japan. The parents have been told that the video has been seen as far away as Iraq. They were even asked if Omari could participate in step shows. Nicholas Bartley of the office Financial planning, Analysis, and Budgeting at Morehouse College invited Omari to attend their homecoming step show. They even received an email from a young lady in the military letting the parents know how much his video enlightens her day since her job is so stressful.
Omari's parents want the readers at Black Greek Network to know that this is something that Omari likes to do for fun and he is not even aware how popular he is. Despite the many request, his school work comes first and this is his main priority. They stress to him everyday the importance of good education and at the same time they encourage him to enjoy what he does and have fun.
