Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity wants to change poor images the public may have about fraternities and plans to do so by letting their charitable side show.

Kappa Alpha Psi is one of the only black fraternities on campus that is socially based; the others are service based, Lieutenant Exchequer Arinze Ifekauche said. All members, however, are required to participate in community service.

One outlet of community service for the fraternity is the Kappa League, which is directly correlated to the national organization and resembles a high school fraternity within the college fraternity.

High school-aged males join Kappa League, if they meet the GPA and extra curricular requirements, to learn more about what it's like to be in the college fraternity, said Cory Jackson, vice president of Kappa Alpha Psi. The high school students are also encouraged to further their education and are required to participate in service projects, he said.  more >>

An old African-American college tradition stepped into the national limelight big time last weekend with the $22-million opening of the film "Stomp the Yard," offering a glimpse into black Greek life that many people never get to see, local enthusiasts said.

"I think it's a good idea," Nate Clarke of Flint, a junior at the University of Michigan- and stepmaster for the school's chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

Hours of practice and drill-team coordination go into step shows, which draw packed houses on college campuses from Ann Arbor to Atlanta. It's also popular among the noncampus crowd - a recent high school step show at Whiting Auditorium was a sellout.

"My daughter is a sophomore at Grambling (University in Louisiana), and people would be in line at 6 p.m. for a step show at 7," said Sam Wells, immediate past president of Alpha Phi Alpha's Flint alumni chapter.  more >>

Sony Pictures today announced the company will donate 2.5% (approximately $650,000) of the opening weekend box office receipts of STOMP THE YARD to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation.  STOMP THE YARD will be #1 at the box office for the 4-day weekend, bringing in an estimated $26 million.

A compelling drama about the quest for individuality and the power of fraternity, STOMP THE YARD is set in the world of black Greek letter organizations.  Sony Pictures is making the donation in honor of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, of which Dr. King was a member.  In contributing to the Martin Luther King Memorial Project Foundation, the studio would like to honor the spirit of Dr. King, whose life continues to inspire the youth of today.
