Orangeburg members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will commemorate the founding of the 94-year-old service organization at a Founders Day event at 2 p.m. Feb. 3 in the fellowship hall of Andrew Chapel Baptist Church.
Delta National President Louise A. Rice, Ph.D., of Augusta, Ga., will deliver the keynote Founders Day message to members of Alpha Xi Chapter (South Carolina State) and Gamma Chi Chapter (Claflin).
Rice, a former college professor, will address the sorority’s current biennial theme: “One Mission, One Sisterhood: Empowering Communities through Committed Service.”
“I am very eager to celebrate the sorority’s founding with my sisters,” Rice said. “Sharing this special occasion this year reflects much more than our traditional observance of Delta’s heritage.” more >>

Stepping up to the plate

Spring classes hadn't even started yet but a group of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity brothers at Tennessee State University were already sweating away in a secluded corner ofcampus.
Inside the racquetball court they'd temporarily lain claim to, the walls echoed with their stomping, their clapping, their chants and discourse. The space was tight, the room an oven. Until school began, twice a day they'd gather to do this. And when school did start, they somehow fit frequent practices around their classes and jobs.
They've got a stepping competition, known as a step show, on Feb. 10, and this is what it takes when you've got a reputation to protect.
"Phi Beta Sigma is known for stepping," said 20-year-old Delandrion Todd, the chapter's step master, which means he organizes practices. "That's why we work so hard. You don't ever want to come in second." more >>

Fraternity wants to ban the "N" word
by

on Sat 27 Jan 2007 06:59 PM EST
Former Seinfield star Michael Richards made national headlines last November when he used the "N" word during a comedy routine in Los Angeles.
It re-ignited the debate on whether the word is acceptable under any circumstances. Two African-American magazines, Jet and Ebony, are now banning the word from their publications and now students at Albany State University want to spread the same message on their campus.
One student organization on campus is making a big deal about it - - members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. They're taking a stand on a word that originated as a derogatory expression toward African-Americans. more >>

Comedian Sheryl Underwood may amaze audiences as host of "Comic View" on BET. But that was not the only reason about 100 women attended a luncheon at New World Landing on Saturday to hear her speak. Underwood was there to entertain and also to celebrate the founding of the black sorority Zeta Phi Beta, of which she is the national executive board chairwoman.
Her audience -- sorority sisters and a few brothers from Alpha Sigma Beta -- came from as far as Madison, Ga., and Tallahassee.
Underwood wore a sparkling-blue jacket that accentuated her shoulder-length perm. Most of the sorority sisters in the audience also wore blue. more >>

Historically black frat strives for recognition at Dartmouth College
by

on Tue 23 Jan 2007 02:31 PM EST
When Rudy Chounoune '07 and his fellow members of the historically black fraternity Omega Psi Phi attended a discussion about homophobia and HIV this past week, they noticed how surprised other attendees were to see members of a Greek organization publicly engaging in a discussion of such weighty issues. This way is but one, members said, in which the fraternity stands out among the many Greek organizations on campus.
Omega Psi Phi came to campus in 2005, gained probationary status as a colony this past Fall term and is currently awaiting full recognition by the College.
The fraternity is part of the "Divine Nine," nine historically black Greek letter organizations, and was first founded at Howard University in 1911. Omega Psi Phi has a unique connection with the College as Ernest E. Just, Class of 1907, served as faculty advisor to the first Omega Psi Phi chapter at Howard University. more >>

For the past month, several Frankfort children have been working with Kentucky State University fraternity Phi Beta Sigma at the Kings Center. The sessions have focused on study skills and conflict resolution. After the work was done, the children got the opportunity to learn a step, with the promise of letting them show it off during halftime of the KSU-Morehouse game Thursday night.
"They were the hit of the entire game," said Irma Johnson, a service learning program coordinator at KSU.
