Alpha Phi Alpha was first intercollegiate service frat for black men

The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will celebrate its 100th anniversary this week, just after NIU celebrated its 100th Homecoming two weeks ago.

"The Seven Days of Ma'at" centennial celebration is based on Alpha Phi Alpha's Egyptian theories and African principles. The celebration began Sunday and will continue until Saturday night. Each day's event correlates with the seven principles of Ma'at, an Egyptian goddess, and includes righteousness, justice, order, balance, reciprocity, truth and harmony.

Alpha Phi Alpha was established Dec. 4, 1906, at Cornell University as the first intercollegiate service fraternity for black men.   more >>

The show started at 7pm and doors opened at 6pm. There was also a performance by UA’s hip hop dance group, RipTide, and an appearance by Sheree Woods, a Homecoming Court winner and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  more >>

OSU students held the 11th annual Project Success to reach out to minority students across the state and show them what OSU and higher education have to offer.

The project is an investment in the students, said Crystal McClarty, MBA student and graduate assistant for the multicultural students association. If the project reaches one student, then the investment was well-worth it.

“It’s important for high schoolers to see that OSU is multicultural,” said Cory Cox, a marketing senior.

The day concluded with a lively step-show in the Student Union Little Theater. Dancers from Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta performed energetically to hip-hop music for the audience.   more >>
