In the longing faces, 23-year-old Marchavis Caldwell saw himself.

He saw kids on Rock Hill's south side without a summer camp close by, or maybe without the cash to go to camp.

So Caldwell and the Q's started their own camp.

Caldwell and several of his brothers from Winthrop University's Omega Psi Phi fraternity -- nicknamed the Qs because the Omega looks like a Q -- decided to man the camp. Rock Hill's Parks Recreation and Tourism department helped with use of the Emmett Scott recreation center and camp supplies.   more >>

View Article  Longtime AKA teacher celebrates a century

Dozens of friends gathered Saturday at St. Joseph's AME Church to celebrate the 100th birthday of longtime Durham elementary school teacher Addie Marie Faulk.

Faulk, who lives at the Brian Center on Fayetteville Road, has been an active member of the church for more than half her life, serving for decades as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent and an active member of the Ladies Aid Club and Lay Organization.

She's been affiliated for more than 50 years with the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and has been an active volunteer with the YWCA, Duke University Hospital and Lincoln Hospital -- the black hospital that was merged with Watts Hospital to ultimately become Durham Regional Hospital.    more >>

View Article  Deltas win Midwest Alumnae Chapter of the Year award

The Minneapolis/St. Paul Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was recently awarded the Midwest Alumnae Chapter of the Year award at their Midwest Regional Conference held July 14-17 in Columbus, Ohio.

This award recognizes one alumnae chapter that has exemplified the ideals and beliefs of the organization by implementing innovative programs in support of the sorority's five-point programmatic thrust: economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement.  more >>
