Those attending the 29th gathering of the “Lunch Bunch" at the Reston home of Thelma and Roosevelt "Cal" Calbert were surprised, Aug. 9, to find themselves the guests at a wedding.

For the past 11 years, Thelma lobbied for various issues on Capitol Hill; been the chairman of the schooling counsel for Delta Kappa Gama, an honor society for female educators; started a weekly bridge club; worked actively in her church, Washington Plaza Baptist Church in Reston; remained active in her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha; and worked with a retired educators' group.   more >>

View Article  Alpha Kappa Alpha mentoring program gives girls tools

The Edwardsville Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Upsilon Phi Omega, concluded its three-part summer mentoring program Saturday. The program, Tomorrow's Pearl, was conducted as part of the sorority's Black Family Programming Initiative.

Participants of the program included 11 girls ages 13 to 16. The program featured one workshop each month starting in June.

Saturday's workshop was entitled "Increasing Your Cash Flow While Setting Your Goals."  more >>

View Article  Ex-SLU student sues Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. over initiation

A former St. Louis University student has sued one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious African-American sororities, claiming a hazing ritual prompted a car accident that resulted in permanent injuries to her.

The woman, Courtney Easter, filed the suit Wednesday in St. Louis Circuit Court. Easter is claiming that the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, its top officers and several of its members had roles in a car accident on Oct. 31, 2003, in which she was severely injured.   more >>
