Thousands of people lined Michigan Avenue Sunday afternoon to offer condolences and pay their respects to John H. Johnson, a giant in the media industry and an icon in the African American community.
Johnson, the founder of a business empire that included Ebony and Jet magazines, the Ebony Fashion Fair and Fashion Fair cosmetics, died of heart failure in Chicago on Aug. 8. He was 87.
Johnson was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and nearly 100 of his brothers paid tribute to him during a ceremony reserved for deceased members.
They sang and issued a proclamation in his name as he moved into the Omega chapter, the final resting place for the organization's members. more >>
