View Article  Phi Beta Sigma will step in Los Angeles

Several members of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity will attend the National Step Show today through Sunday.

Jermael King, one of the fraternity members who is attending, said this is the first time the fraternity has qualified.

"I'm really excited," he said. "This is the first time we've been able to go."

Nine members will attend the conference, which is hosted in Los Angeles, Calif., and six members will be competing.   more >>

View Article  Alpha Phi Alpha Vance Pierce named to the new position of coordinator of intercultural life at Monmouth College

Vance Pierce, formerly of Peoria, has been named to the new position of coordinator of intercultural life at Monmouth College.

Pierce's primary duties will include providing international and minority students with scholarship, internship and employment information, as well as programming that enriches their college experience.

The new coordinator will oversee such existing programs as Black History Month and the Intercultural Festival, while developing new ones, such as a Cultures in America series.  more >>

View Article  Senator Tony Hill works with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and the Black Male Explorers Program
Black males are at a "critical state" with regard to education in Florida, a Florida state senator says, and he's hosting a series of town hall meetings to discuss it.

Sen. Tony Hill will host a meeting at 1 p.m. at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach at the Science Lecture Hall on Wednesday. The focus will be on middle school education.

Hill is working with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and the Black Male Explorers Program which aims promote self esteem to help more at-risk black males stay in school.   more >>

As summer session draw to a close and many students prepare for a final break with their family before the fall session, families who call the Ronald McDonald house home will be absent from friends and family while their child is fighting for his or her life.

The Ronald McDonald house in Memphis is low or out of many basic supplies.

The Theta Psi chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is seeking support from students and residents this week to get the needed items.   more >>

 Dressed in floor-length pink gowns with their hair upswept, looking poised and chic, a dozen middle school girls showed just why their style was as much on the inside as out.  

Speaking before a packed audience at Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center in Ellicott City earlier this month, the girls, who range in age between 13 and 16 years old, voiced concerns for their generation and the next.   more >>

Tamyria Burch proudly showed off her T-shirt, which was autographed by Troy University basketball player Jarvis Acker.

Asked her favorite part of Fun Day With Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the 9-year-old said, "When he's shooting the ball."

Acker and Troy teammates Richard Damus and Jonathan Lee put on a little exhibition against some Charles Henderson High students for the crowd of about 50 children at the Troy Housing Authority Family Day Center on Saturday.   more >>

This July, two Forest Hills teachers, Mrs. Jennifer Barfield and Mrs. Stephanie Hardin, along with the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Wanda Sloan, will be traveling to Ghana, the school’s focus country for next year. During their trip they are going to visit local schools, taking supplies for the students.

The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Iota Sigma Zeta Chapter of New Bern, NC held its Finer Womanhood and Legacy Banquet at the Flame Restaurant on Sunday, March 20, 2005. The theme for the occasion was “Preserving Our Legacy for Future Generations.”

Tiffaney Greene served as Mistress of Ceremonies. The Chapter’s President, Verna Okali extended a hearty welcome to all. Sudie Way gave the purpose of the occasion. It was to celebrate Zeta’s Finer Womanhood and the 25th year of the founding of Iota Sigma Zeta Chapter.  more >>

View Article  Kamp Kappa for at risk boys

About 50 African-American boys ages 10-15 learned what it takes to be a leader and work as a team when Hemlock Overlook Regional Park hosted the 15th annual Camp Kappa from June 26 to July 1.

The camp run by members of the Alexandria Alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi is geared towards underprivileged, at-risk boys from metropolitan Washington, D.C. During the week, campers took turns on the Zip Wire and canoed down the Occoquan to learn team-building exercises as well as lessons in social skills and cooperation. They awoke at dawn and went hiking, fishing and swimming — to name a few.   more >>

Omega Psi Phi is building the first residence hall for a black fraternity on the University of South Carolina campus.

The $2 million fraternity house will be the national fraternity's first investment of its kind on any campus and make USC one of a handful of large, state-supported universities in the South to have campus housing owned by an African-American Greek organization.   more >>
