The smooth jazz sounds of international recording artist Freddy Cole highlighted the recent scholarship fund-raiser put on by Mu Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Inc.

Cole, the younger brother of the late Nat King Cole, and his quartet performed a concert as part of Blue Revue 2005, Zeta Phi Beta's scholarship fund-raiser held every two years to benefit youths and community outreach services.

The Blue Revue also presents entertainment to the Baton Rouge community.  more >>

The brothers of Xi Upsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity have been working diligently over the past 55 years for the youth and Golden Triangle community. Most recently, the group presented its annual Debutante Ball.

The Debutante Ball has been in existence since 1968. The event that was brought to the area through the efforts of Brother Lawrence Pierre and Quette Mildred Pierre and has served as a mechanism to recognize young women in their first year of college, highlighting their past, present and anticipated future accomplishments.   more >>

View Article  Outstanding Greeks receive recognition - Phi Beta Sigma

University sorority and fraternity chapters, as well as individual members of the Greek community, were honored last night at the fourth annual Greek Awards Ceremony, coordinated by the Inter-Greek Committee and sponsored by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

The Inter-Greek Committee presented the chapter of the year award to Phi Beta Sigma from the Black Fraternal Council, Phi Gamma Delta from Inter-Fraternity Council, Alpha Phi from Inter-Sorority Council and Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority from Multi-Cultural Greek Council.  more >>

View Article  Alpha Phi Alpha looks to the future - Pleased with their decision to join IFC

After the Iota Beta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. transferred from the Black Fraternal Council to the Inter-Fraternity Council in February, some members of the University community debated whether the Alphas had made the right decision.

Two months later, the Alphas are active members of the IFC and continue to feel positive about their decision, according to Alpha Secretary Cameron Webb.

"It worked out well, and I think we're definitely still exactly on track with our original vision for joining the IFC," Webb said.  more >>

Architecture senior Emmanuel “Keke” Ekeke has seen everything black Greek life here has to offer — all from behind a camera.

The Phi Beta Sigma fraternity member recorded the fun times within black Greek life with his newly released DVD, African-American Legacies @ UTA. Ekeke has sold 40 copies at $10 a piece since December but said the DVD’s goal is to celebrate student life on this campus.

“I tried to document and commemorate the African-Americans on campus,” he said. “With the DVD, I also want to invite other organizations and races to have an insight in what we do and participate.”  more >>

View Article  ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA PLANS ARTS ALIVE! EVENT MAY 13

The local Tyler chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., will present Arts Alive! at 6 p.m. Friday, May 13, in the Jan E. Jones Fine Arts Center on the Robert E. Lee High School campus.

Arts Alive! is an area-wide youth arts competition in which youngsters (grades 7-12) will showcase their talents in art, dance, drama and music, organizers said. Tickets are $5, and may be purchased from sorority members and at MOM Record Store. Proceeds will benefit Alpha Kappa Alpha's scholarship fund.

Co-hosts for the event will be Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority member Constance Jones, KETK 56 reporter/anchor; and Darryl Bowdre, minister of South Central Church of Christ, editor-in-chief of Ebony News Journal, and executive director of the Tyler Metro Chamber of Commerce.  more >>

Fraternity Row is about to get a feminine touch now that plans to begin construction in June on new sorority housing have been approved.

The Offices of Campus Life and Campus Planning approved the design of a 92,000-square-foot sorority village last Thursday. It will be built at the site of the parking lot next to the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity house.   more >>

View Article  Johnnetta B. Cole - Delta Sigma Theta Sorority - History Maker

If there were a picture in the dictionary next to the word mentor, it would be Johnnetta B. Cole, who distinguished herself as a leader and educator as the first African-American female to lead Spelman College a little more than a decade ago. Cole is now the 14th president of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C. In her own right, she's a history maker:  

She was the first African-American to serve as chair of the board of United Way of America. She serves on the board of Merck & Co. Inc. and the Atlanta Falcons. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Links Inc. and the National Council of Negro Women.  more >>

View Article  Ice Train attracts crowd of 1,000-plus

The sounds of stomping, clapping and canes against the stage floor filled Centennial Hall Saturday afternoon.

More than 1,000 people attended the Sixth Annual Ice Train Classic Step Show hosted by the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

The event has grown every year since its inception in 1999. In the beginning, the show could barely fill the Social Sciences auditorium with the capacity of 500 people.  more >>
