I applaud Southern University Dean of Student Life Robert Bennett, for his recent expulsion of the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., from the university's Baton Rouge campus. And kudos to Raymond A. Downs, vice chancellor for student affairs, for rejecting the chapter's appeal.
Bennett was not as lenient with the Greek organization as was its president. Nor was Bennett as lenient as the university's Pan-Hellenic Judiciary Committee, which unanimously rendered a "not guilty" verdict in its hearing of the case against the Omegas. Oh, did I mention that the Pan-Hellenic Council is made up of 18 students, all of whom belong to a campus fraternity or sorority?
In a Feb. 15 letter to Beta Sigma Chapter President Deion Dorsett, Bennett explained that he was expelling the chapter in connection with "allegations of Hazing within your organization on January 25 & 27, 2005." more >>
