More than 100 volunteers were recognized Thursday for endeavors that helped the young, the disabled and the hungry in Durham and surrounding areas.

About 230 people attended the Volunteer Center of Durham's annual Key Volunteer Recognition Ceremony at the Durham Civic Center.

While many volunteers were recognized, seven individuals and one group were selected as volunteers of the year.

Volunteers who received top honors include:

Emmalene Reade was recognized as volunteer of the year in the senior volunteer category for her work with Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Reade is the coordinator of the Share Food Program, which provides about 375 families, including the elderly and the disabled, food at a low cost, according to ceremony organizers.  more >>
