Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted a black faculty mixer Tuesday in the African American Cultural Center that allowed students to mingle and get to know black faculty members.

LaToya Torrence, a sophomore pharmacy major, said she is new to campus and was glad to have the opportunity to get to know faculty on a more personal level.

Torrence said she wanted the opportunity to "get acquainted with the black teachers."  more >>

Majority Whip Kathryn Bowers (Memphis) has selected Rep. JoAnne Favors, D-Chattanooga, to be an Assistant Whip for the 104th General Assembly now convened in Nashville.

Rep. Favors is a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and a mother of four. A health administrator and retired Associate Nursing Professor, Favors holds an M.S. in Nursing Administration and Adult Health, as well as both a B.S. and an A.S. in Nursing. She is also active in Gamma Theta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Women's Leadership Council, Tennessee and American Nurses Association, Elks Springmeade Neighborhood Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nurses, Annual Southside Family Reunion Organizer, Daughters of Elks Temple #364, Unity Group, PUSH, Women in Government, Chattanooga neighborhood Enterprise, Hamilton County Democratic Women's club, Howard High School Alumni Association, and the National Association of State Legislatures.   more >>


View Article  Student suing sorority over hazing incident
A University of Toledo student is suing the school and the president of a sorority for injuries she said were caused in a hazing incident last year.

Jonetta Reed filed the lawsuit last week in Lucas County Common Pleas Court. She said she was paddled on the buttocks and thighs and subjected to other incidents as part of the initiation into the Xi Beta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho sorority.

Angelia M. Brown, who is president of the chapter, and Lydia C. Thomas are accused of paddling Ms. Reed. They were named as defendants in the complaint, which was assigned to Judge Charles Wittenberg. She is seeking in excess of $25,000 in damages.  more >>

View Article  Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. - Phi Gamma chapter forced to close
The local chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Pi Gamma, was closed by the national fraternity with an official vote of its board of directors Jan. 7, prohibiting the fraternity to return to Sacramento State.

Lou Camera, director of Student Activities, was notified of the decision last week by mail.

Paul Cody, the Greek liaison in the UC Davis student programs and activities center, was also notified that the Davis chapter had lost its charter.    more >>

Hundreds came to the Southfield Star theatre for the special screening of “1 NATION, 2 WORLDS.” The film is the second full-length feature for Wayne State University graduate Qasim A. Basir.

The feature film, “1 NATION, 2 WORLDS,” is an in-depth examination of trials and tribulations of two young men who have experienced life from extremely opposite outlooks.

With a second full-length film under his belt, the former student council vice president and member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Basir has a wide open future in front of him. Basir is a doer, rather than a talker.

If he keeps his productivity at the same output level, his name will be mentioned in the annuls of Detroit lore for years to come.   more >>
