The Zeta Phi chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. has a rich history of stepping.
In 1998, Cedric Jones and Robert Willis had a vision to bring Greek life to another level at ISU. They brought the Indiana Statewide Stepshow from Ball State to ISU for the first time. Phi Beta Sigma competes each year to keep the stepshow at ISU.
The show brings together different Indiana schools to compete for the title of hosting the show for the next year.
The other acts compete for the title and a cash prize of $2,500.
"The show has grown from being a small event to being a strong event each year," said Jones, chapter adviser. more >>

Members of Kappa Alpha Psi formed "The Brothers," in the fall to provide positive role models for black students in hopes of improving discipline and academic performance.
Assistant Principal Beverly Smith said the idea was to help steer the fifth-grade boys in the right direction.
"These were students with challenging behaviors," she said, "students I call 'frequent flyers' because they were frequently in my office." more >>

Johnnie L. Cochran Jr., the masterful attorney who gained prominence as an early advocate for victims of police abuse, then achieved worldwide fame for successfully defending football star OJ. Simpson on murder charges, died this afternoon. He was 67. Cochran died at his home in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles of an inoperable brain tumor, according to his brother-in-law Bill Baker. His wife and his two sisters were with him at the time of his death. Cochran, his family and colleagues were secretive about his illness to protect the attorney's privacy as well as the network of Cochran law offices that largely draw their cachet from his presence. But Cochran confirmed in a Sept. 2004 interview with The Times that he was being treated by the eminent neurosurgeon Keith Black at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. more >>

Age has its distinct advantages.
There's the respect, for one -- and Hattie Morris has earned plenty of that. There's the sage advice -- she has that, too, and she doesn't bother to sugarcoat the truth.
Now, if she could only find a boyfriend.
But Morris, who turned 104 on Thursday, is having a little trouble there. She's particular, although she acknowledges she'd have to find a younger man. more >>

University students will get to see what diversity looks like this week -- albeit only for a few days.
More than 1,500 members of Kappa Alpha Psi, a national black fraternity with a chapter on campus, will come to the University for the 54th Southeastern Province Council Meeting, which begins Thursday and ends Sunday.
There are little more than 1,000 black undergraduates currently enrolled at the University.
The fraternity members and guests from Georgia and South Carolina will come to campus to talk about issues in their chapters and strengthen chapter "cohesiveness," Chapter President Kevin Wilson said.
"We're going to take over the campus," said Nicholas Bedford, keeper of the records for the chapter. more >>
