The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Chattanooga Chapter kicked off its “Black Dollar Days” Campaign Tuesday morning.

Due to success from last year’s campaign, “Black Dollar Day” has been extended for several days.

Starting today, the African American Community is asked to purchase two dollar bills from the four participating banks: Amsouth, First Tennessee, SunTrust, and Tennessee Valley Credit Union, and then spend those $2 bills for four days, February 11th – 14th.   more >>

In recognition of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, members of the Tau Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in conjunction with the Central Iberville Community Complex and the Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church, celebrated a "Day of Service" by sponsoring their first ever Clothes Closet Distribution on Jan. 17. Four contestants from both Virginia Tech and Radford competed in four categories to win the Miss Black and Gold 2005 title. The pageant was part of Tech’s Black History Month celebration.

Cheers rose up from the crowd and a standing ovation was delivered as Hermona Kiros belted out her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “Saving all my love for you.” Clearly this isn’t your typical Miss America pageant. The Miss Egyptian Goddess Pageant was held last night by the Alpha Phi Alpha, an event that aimed to showcase the intelligence, beauty and talents of the African-American women at Virginia Tech.

Chike Akah, brother in APA and junior mining and mineral engineering major, said the goal of the pageant is to get away from society’s typical standards of beauty.  more >>
