Marking the celebration of Black History Month and promoting AIDS/HIV awareness, some campus groups are hosting activities to raise awareness and educate the community about the growing AIDS epidemic.

AIDS/HIV is the No. 1 cause of death for black women ages 25 to 34 years old, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Web site.   more >>

View Article  Alpha Kappa Alpha celebrates chapter's start at North Texas

To ease the pressures of attending a predominately white university during the 1960s, many black students created or joined chapters of black sororities and fraternities.

In October 1969, the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority of the Epsilon Mu chapter provided another organization for black women at NT. "African-American women were the last group of people to experience all the rights granted to them that other whites and women enjoyed," Monica Maxie, president of Alpha Kappa Alpha at NT, said. "[The original Alpha Kappa Alphas] had a vision so you could be here today. It just makes you feel so blessed to enjoy the opportunities that many women sacrificed to have."  more >>

View Article  Iota Phi Theta present the story of one man's struggle and survival in Sudan: From Slavery To Freedom
The Alpha Beta Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. and Campus Activities Board will present the story of one man's struggle and survival in Sudan: From Slavery To Freedom, at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Morruis University Center's Meridian Ballroom.

As part of Black Heritage Month at SIUE, the co-sponsored event will feature a speech by Francis Bok, a former slave in the African country of Sudan. Bok, who was kidnapped during his youth and enslaved in his own country for a decade, now speaks out against the evils of slavery worldwide and has gained international acclaim for his moving accounts of modern-day slavery across the globe.

View Article  Omega Psi Phi host annual strip auction
Omega Psi Phi fraternity went ahead with its annual strip auction Wednesday to raise money for a scholarship fund, despite opposition by the UTA chapter of the College Republicans.

The Republicans went so far as to plan a protest to the auction, although it was canceled at the last minute.

The group’s president, Kat Miller, decried the auction as inappropriate for an on-campus event — even for a good cause — and has said giving the proceeds of the strip auction to charity was like robbing a bank but giving the money to a relative.
