Anyone who has watched Alan Dunson compete in the City League boys track and field meet the last two years already was aware of his speed.

Dunson, who recently earned a scholarship from the Phi Beta Sigma Leadership Program, has been a student ambassador for CPS Superintendent Gene Harris since the end of his sophomore year.

"My mom is a big-time person on academics," Dunson said. "I can't go out of the house without doing my homework. You could be the best basketball player, the best hurdler and the best football player, but what do you do if you blow out your knee?"  more >>

One of the oldest Black Greek letter fraternities is challenging a rash of racist Internet messages posted on a national fraternity/sorority Web site.

The Zeta Zeta chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, based on the campus of the University of South Carolina, has been the subject of bigoted and derogatory postings regarding its move to the all-White Greek Village. There's no argument. Wilt Chamberlain was -- and remains -- Kansas University's best and best-known basketball player.

Though his last game as a Jayhawk was more than 48 years ago, Chamberlain still holds the school records for most single-game points and rebounds, 52 and 36, respectively.

While at KU, Chamberlain lived in the former Carruth O'Leary dormitory, which now houses university offices. He later joined Kappa Alpha Psi, an all-black fraternity.  more >>

Stepping is the most prominent tradition unique to African American Greek organizations, ranging from huge step shows with audiences of hundreds to performing a "stroll" at a party. Although developed by black fraternities and sororities, stepping now extends worldwide to Latino and Asian Greek organizations, high schools, church groups and dance troupes.

The author of Soulstepping, Elizabeth C. Fine, describes stepping as "a complex performance that melds folk traditions with popular culture and involves synchronized percussive movement, singing, speaking, chanting and drama."   more >>

A black woman who converted to Islam in 2000, Abdul-Haqq considered joining an established black sorority but worried that she would have to compromise her Muslim beliefs.
