The Stillwater Police Department responded to a fight in progress early Friday morning at a party hosted by Omega Psi Phi. The first arriving officers reported hearing shots fired in the area of the disturbance.

About 30 people were involved in the fight at the White Barn Estate, 2020 E. Lakeview.

According to a press release from SPD, witnesses said they heard gunshots, but a suspect could not be identified. No combatants were located either.

Omega Psi Phi is part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, which oversees African-American fraternities and sororities.  more >>

Alumni from a U of M fraternity are urging parents to become familiar with who is influencing their children. Guthrie Elementary School Students had Saturday off, but the inside of the school was bustling with parents and students. Men from the University of Memphis Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity were also there. They were on a mission to give back to their community.  more >>

It is stepping, a longtime collegiate tradition at historically black fraternities and sororities that has found its way to local high schools, where step teams, small and large, have taken on the challenge of memorizing complex choreographed routines. Cary has edged out Atlanta and Chicago to lure the international headquarters of Sigma Gamma Rho, a historically black sorority now based in Chicago.
 
Sigma Gamma Rho will open its new office in February after acquiring in December the 18,000-square-foot Colony on Weston Parkway II building, which is on Southill Drive. The group, through its Seven Pearls Foundation Inc., paid nearly $2.7 million for the building that First Colony Corp. of Charlotte built in 2000.  more >>

"The Cosby Show" is a well-known cultural depiction of a black family.

But the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. questioned whether it is a true representation of the black family at their Wednesday event, "The Black Family Through the Camera Lens: Does Prime Time Reflect Our Time?"

The members of the Iota Chapter hosted the event as one of the sorority's "Skee-Week" events. The program featured an episode of "The Cosby Show," followed by a discussion of the definition of the black family, how it varies from place to place, and how it has changed over time.  more >>
