The Martin Luther King Club Inc. (MLK Club), in partnership with the American Legion Riders of Post 148 Chapter and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, hosted Santa on Tour and Trolley ride at the Old Fort YMCA, 2221 Reed St., on Dec. 8. The three organizations came together and decorated the party room at the Old Fort Y, resulting in a Christmas theme for all the kids to enjoy. The groups provided snacks, and purchased and wrapped toys so that all the kids in attendance could enjoy the Christmas spirit.
More than 100 kids participated in the event, which featured a trolley ride from the Old Fort Y through downtown Fort Wayne to see and enjoy the Christmas decorations. Activities for the day included the reading of Christmas stories by the Amicettes youth group of Zeta Phi Beta, a visit with Santa Claus and a present from Santa.
The kids at the Old Fort Y were very excited and appreciated the gifts they received from Santa. They also enjoyed candy bags, cookies and juice. One joyous fiveyear- old girl at the event remarked, "I'm so excited," and had the biggest smile of joy on her face because of the festivities and gift she received from Santa. This type of reaction is what makes the event worth the effort, said Sheryl Edwards, coordinator of the event.
Edwards is a MLK Club Inc. board member, president of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and treasurer of the American Legion Riders.
It was a wonderful collaboration between the organizations. It also goes on to prove that, with the right attitude and cooperation, we all can work together and achieve a successful outcome. Thanks to all the groups that participated. Also, a special thank you goes out to the Fort Wayne Police Department Reserve Officers who provided security and a feeling of safety during the event. If we don't support our community, who will?
