It’s about sound, syncopated sound. It’s about movement, synchronized movement. And it’s about teamwork, spirited teamwork that sends a message of pride in oneself and one’s school.

It is stepping, a longtime collegiate tradition at historically black fraternities and sororities that has found its way to local high schools, where step teams, small and large, have taken on the challenge of memorizing complex choreographed routines. Stomping in hard-soled shoes, slapping body parts in percussive cadences, chanting and clapping, the steppers create their own music.  more >>

Cary has edged out Atlanta and Chicago to lure the international headquarters of Sigma Gamma Rho, a historically black sorority now based in Chicago.
 
Sigma Gamma Rho will open its new office in February after acquiring in December the 18,000-square-foot Colony on Weston Parkway II building, which is on Southill Drive. The group, through its Seven Pearls Foundation Inc., paid nearly $2.7 million for the building that First Colony Corp. of Charlotte built in 2000.  more >>
