If a preacher named Robert Toatley were alive today, he would have just come home after at least two days on the road. He would have been tired. His feet would have hurt, and his voice would have been hoarse.
He would have come from Jena, La., after marching for fair justice for all Americans, said his widow, Juanita.

"My husband didn't sit still when there was someone who needed him," Juanita Toatley said Friday. "He would have been in Louisiana, and he would have taken people with him from Rock Hill, too."

After he got home today, if he were alive, Robert Toatley likely would have put on a dark suit and blue tie to go with the snow-white shirt -- because his fraternity was blue and white -- and applauded as three teens just like he was so many years ago found out they had scholarship money to go to college.   more »

Enrollment on the rise at Xavier University

Educators from across the country joined with community leaders here on Friday for an education symposium aimed at closing the achievement gap among urban youth and tackling other critical issues affecting them.

"We believe it takes a village," said Dr. Louise A. Rice, national president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., which hosted the three-day summit as part of its continued commitment to the rebuilding city. "We are so pleased that so many people have gathered for the same cause-the education of our children."

Rice said at least 300 people had registered for the conference, which concludsed on Sunday.   more »

View Article  Divine Nine Students Help Fire Victim

Some Albany State students came together Wednesday night to help out a fellow student in need.

Students paid $2.00 to watch a greek-organization-sponsored benefit basketball game.

They raised $500 for Finetra Chambers who lost her apartment when fire swept through the Hidden Oaks complex back in July.
