These construction workers stand out.

For the last few Saturdays, they've hammered and sawed, painted and caulked on a Habitat for Humanity house under construction in South Dallas.

"It's good to channel the grief you have into something positive," said seven-year breast cancer survivor Terri Swain of Azle, who brought her son along Saturday. "It's a cool project. There's a lot of energy, and you meet so many others."

While many cancer survivors help with races and relays, Breast Cancer Builds founder Sheron Patterson believes this is the first time a group of survivors has gathered to build a house.   more »

In the grand finale, lights and smoke attracted the audience's attention to the entrance of the auditorium as Manhattan High School's step team started its performance.
A celebration of dance and step brought members of the community together through MHS and Black Student Union's "Unity in the Community" event Friday night at the MHS West Campus.

The Fort Riley dance group Girls With a Future opened with a tribute to U.S. soldiers.
The women of Delta Sigma Theta and Alpha Kappa Alpha followed, incorporating stepping into skits that put emphasis on the historical background of the sororities.
"Having the greeks from K-State participate gives the show more "umph," said Jasmine Cook, president of MHSÕs BSU and captain of the step team at MHS. Alpha Phi Alpha members showed their support with a step-routine performance and an imitation of a scene from "You Got Served" to hype up the audience. Rap group High Poynt Studios changed the event's vibe. They came from Junction City to support the show's "Unity in the Community" theme.   more »

Here I am, sitting in my office, all set to slam on the Greeks for not having enough STD/HIV awareness activities, when the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. jump up and take all the steam out of my argument.

And then the members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. jumped up and grabbed some steam of their own.

Don't you just hate it when you get all fired up to argue something, but then you find out you're wrong?

Keshia Knight Pulliam (actress, attended Atlanta's Spelman College, starred as "Rudy Huxtable" in the landmark NBC series The Cosby Show from 1984-1992):

"School Daze definitely had an impact on me choosing a HBCU because it was the first insight I had into a black college. The whole Jiggaboo light skin vs. the dark skin [dance] scene, where they’re singing back and forth, I think if you ask anyone, that’s the scene that stands out. There’s a whole   more »

Charlottesville has undergone some major transformations in the past eight decades. Schools have been desegregated. Neighborhoods have changed. The population has increased, as has traffic.

Josephine Lightfoot Whitsett, 84, has seen it all. Whitsett, who lives in the same house on Page Street in which she was born, worked as an educator in the city school system for nearly four decades and remains active in the community both through her public service sorority - Delta Sigma Theta - and her church - Ebenezer Baptist on Sixth Street.“I can’t even fathom the number of lives she has touched,” said Jacqueline Estes, who attended city schools and has taught at Charlottesville High School for 29 years. “She’s made a big impact across   more »
