by
Otis Collier
on Sun 20 Feb 2005 08:41 AM EST
Sounds of stepping and clapping filled the stage of Lisner Auditorium Saturday night at the Alpha Phi Alpha Step Show, but the rhythm was heard by only half the expected crowd. Besides catering to mostly empty seats in a 1,500-person venue that was expected to be filled, the eighth annual dance competition also failed to attract half of the acts scheduled to perform. "People just didn't follow through with their commitments," said senior Isaiah Pickens, president of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. more >>

The five-member Omega Delta Phi fraternity step show team strutted off the University Center Rosebud Theatre stage Wednesday night in matching silk button-down shirts and ties as a crowd of more than 100 people roared with excitement. Each member unexpectedly stomped back onstage for an encore presentation, which featured synchronized clapping and step sequences with some of the audience members dancing along in the aisles. more >>

Black frat members say fewer is better
by
Otis Collier
on Sat 12 Feb 2005 11:16 AM EST
Being a member of a small fraternity has its advantages, according to Marques Moore.
As president of Alpha Phi Alpha, Moore heads up one of only two historically black fraternities at Ball State University.
Together with the campus's three historically black sororities and a Latina-oriented sorority, the six organizations boast a total membership of 41 men and women and make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).
In comparison, the 10 fraternities and 11 sororities belonging to the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) have a combined membership of 1,256 people. more >>

Are Ethic Greek Organizations Cultural or Racial?
by
Otis Collier
on Sat 05 Feb 2005 11:54 AM EST
This week, MSU fraternities and sororities are looking to rush prospective members and some students are searching - just like Leon did - for a place to belong.
Students who have joined minority fraternities and sororities say the groups provide a built-in campus family.
But others say minority greek organizations are inadvertently creating racial barriers on and around campus.
About 30 percent of MSU fraternities and sororities are non-academically based and are either multicultural or for a specific minority group. more >>

The Miss Egyptian Goddess Pageant held by Alpha Phi Alpha
by
Otis Collier
on Wed 02 Feb 2005 08:58 PM EST
Four contestants from both Virginia Tech and Radford competed in four categories to win the Miss Black and Gold 2005 title. The pageant was part of Tech’s Black History Month celebration.
Cheers rose up from the crowd and a standing ovation was delivered as Hermona Kiros belted out her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “Saving all my love for you.” Clearly this isn’t your typical Miss America pageant. The Miss Egyptian Goddess Pageant was held last night by the Alpha Phi Alpha, an event that aimed to showcase the intelligence, beauty and talents of the African-American women at Virginia Tech.
Chike Akah, brother in APA and junior mining and mineral engineering major, said the goal of the pageant is to get away from society’s typical standards of beauty. more >>

BlackGreekBooks.com Celebrate the Rich Legacies of Black College Fraternities and Sororities
by
Otis Collier
on Tue 01 Feb 2005 11:03 PM EST
According to a Detroit News Special Report, colleges’ retention of blacks is dismal. With greater student competition and such vigorous opposition to quota systems based on race, how can black students position themselves for greater college success? One way could be to align themselves with like-minded peers by joining a fraternity or sorority such as Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Zeta Phi Beta, Phi Beta Sigma, Iota Phi Theta, Alpha Phi Alpha or Sigma Gamma Rho. more >>
