Walking across campus day to day, you may have noticed some young, sophisticated-looking women dressed in pink and green.
Hopefully both your stomach and your ears were satisfied after grabbing a piece of cake and hearing their voices rise as they sang their national hymn last Tuesday in celebration of their centennial.
The Eta Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. held both private and public celebrations to commemorate their centennial last week. Many students enjoyed the free cake and festivities.
"The cake in the KUC was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.," said Vice President Audra Smith.
"The date Jan. 15, 2008 marked the actual founding date of Jan. 15, 1908 of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. 100 years ago," she said while cutting a piece of cake.
"We wanted the campus to be aware of our 100 years of sisterhood, scholarship, and service. Since Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's main purpose is to serve, we decided to give back to our fellow student body and community," said Smith, a senior elementary education major.
Recent graduate and member-at-large Whitney Hawkins returned to campus to help celebrate alongside her sorority sisters.
"This is a big milestone for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and we felt it was important to include the campus in our celebration. We have accomplished a lot in 100 years and we will continue to progress and achieve more," said Hawkins.
"Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the first historically black Greek sorority. We are not only the epitome of what a lady should be, but we have set standards of what sisterhood, scholarship, and service truly are," said Smith.
"My organization is an organization that promotes sisterhood among all women, and not exclusively for our sorority," said Hawkins.
"We are very involved with campus and not just social events," said Lauren Simpson, who serves as member-at-large, chaplain, and assists with public relations.
"The Eta Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will be hosting numerous community service and social events on campus," said Smith.
"We do community service on a regular basis, we have an annual prayer breakfast, and freshman forum, as well as several other events throughout the year," said Simpson.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will be hosting a sweetheart auction on Feb. 10.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. annual Skee-week will be April 13-19. It will consist of several educational forums, as well as socializing events for students.
"All events that week will be open to the whole student body, and it will be much like previous Skee-weeks but even bigger and better, " said Simpson.
The events will be posted in the KUC throughout the semester.
"The task of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is always greater than before. The growth along with the service of Alpha Kappa Alpha is continuous and never ending," said Smith.
"I see Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. continuing to grow for years to come, to expand, and do even more for the community as we strive to serve mankind" said Simpson.
The Eta Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha will join other chapters to take part in the national 2008 Centennial Boule this July in Washington, D.C.
As part of this once-in-a-century celebration they will be hosting an economic service partnership unity march, town hall society forums, a concert by Patti LaBelle and more.
